The Japanese Earthquake and Leveraged ETFs

March 18, 2011 by jordan

The earthquake and tsunami in Japan are a horrifying human tragedy, and our hearts must go out to the thousands of victims and their families.

It would be wrong to equate financial loss with loss of actual lives. Yet, the natural disaster and its subsequent impact on the Japanese stock market highlights the investment risk of securities that place big bets on single market indices like the Nikkei, which dropped 10.6% on March 15, 2011. Leveraged ETFs are one type of investment where the risks of big one day market swings can be profound.

As we discuss in our article entitled “Leveraged ETFs,” these short-term investments are risky, understood by few investors, and suitable for even fewer.
