John C. Porter is Of Counsel with the firm. John joined Smiley Bishop & Porter LLP in July of 2006 with over 30 years of commercial litigation experience in Georgia, including state, federal, and bankruptcy court jurisdictions. He has appeared in state courts in over half the counties in Georgia and in federal and bankruptcy courts in the Northern, Middle, and Southern Districts of Georgia.
John has represented clients in a wide variety of securities cases and commercial controversies, including securities fraud litigation, unregistered securities sales, shareholder and member disputes in closely held corporations and limited liability companies, general contract disputes, mortgage fraud, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Truth-In-Lending, Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, and other credit litigation cases, and insurance coverage claims. He has experience representing out-of-state financial institutions in reviewing their programs and policies for compliance with Georgia regulatory laws and regulations.
From 2000 to early 2002, Mr. Porter was the Atlanta office managing Partner of Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP and most recently as a partner in the law firm of Stites & Harbison PLLC where he served as the leader of the Atlanta Litigation Service Group. He is authorized to practice in all Georgia state courts, the United States District Courts for the Northern, Southern, and Middle Districts of Georgia, and the United States District Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and Sixth Circuit.
Mr. Porter has been awarded a Martindale-Hubbell’s rating of “AV® Preeminent”1 which is the highest rating in legal ability and ethical standards. John is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the Atlanta Bar Association.
Mr. Porter is a 1975 Honors Graduate of Emory College and a 1978 graduate of Emory University School of Law. He and his wife Elizabeth have two sons.
